Clinical Evidence of Elemental Diets

Published clinical studies have shown that elemental diets are effective for the nutritional management of patients with moderate to severe impaired gastrointestinal function.1 In a study of 93 patients with IBS and abnormal lactulose breath tests, 80% of those who completed a 14-day amino acid-based elemental diet had normalized test results with an associated improvement in clinical symptoms. A total of 85% saw improvement after 21 days of use.

A 2004 study showed 93 patients with symptoms of IBS and abnormal lactulose breath tests indicating the presence of SIBO were given an elemental diet formula as the sole source of nutrition for two weeks. After two weeks, subjects were retested and those who still had abnormal tests were provided an additional week of the elemental diet. At the end of three weeks, 85% of subjects had normalized breath test results and this correlated with symptom improvement.2

Research has shown that elemental diets can be effective for IBD. In one controlled clinical study, 28 patients with active Crohn’s disease were placed on an elemental diet for four weeks with no other food or medication. Clinical remission was achieved in 71% of cases.3

How to Use

Step 1: Work with your healthcare practitioner to determine your daily caloric requirements (scoops per serving) and set a schedule for “mealtimes.” One heaping scoop of Physicians’ Elemental Diet = 35 grams and 150 calories. Typical dosing is 12 scoops per day, based on an 1,800-calorie diet.

Step 2: Mix each scoop thoroughly with 7-8 oz water (cold or room temperature, depending on preference). Additional water may be added to the mixture or consumed separately as desired.

Step 3: Drink slowly over the course of an hour.

Step 4: Repeat as needed throughout the day.

Step 5: After opening, store remaining powder in a dry place at room temperature. Once mixed, any product that is not consumed after 60 minutes should be refrigerated for a maximum of 24 hours, then shaken or stirred prior to consumption.
